Qualifications

Section 391.11 of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR) states that you must meet certain minimum requirements in order to operate a commercial motor vehicle (CMV). These include:

• Must be at least 21 years old
• Must be able to read and speak English well enough to converse, understand traffic signs, respond to official inquiries, and complete required forms and reports
• Must have experience or training to safely operate the type of equipment you drive
• Must be able to meet the DOT’s physical requirements
• Must have passed and been issued a certificate of Driver’s Road Test
• Must provide your employer a list of any violations for which you have been convicted in the last 12 months
• Must not be disqualified to drive a Commercial Motor Vehicle
• Must have a valid operator’s license for the class of vehicle being operated

Responsibilities

• Operate a tractor-trailer to transport goods safely and efficiently to designated locations.
• Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections to ensure vehicle safety and compliance with regulations.
• Maintain accurate logs of driving hours, mileage, and vehicle maintenance.
• Ensure compliance with all federal and state regulations regarding commercial driving.
• Communicate effectively with dispatchers and clients regarding delivery schedules and any issues that may arise during transit.
• Manage routes efficiently to optimize delivery times while adhering to safety protocols.
